Community Impact
Building Stronger Kids, Stronger Families, Stronger Communities
At ACTKO Albany, our mission extends beyond the walls of the dojo. For Shihan Tony Butler, karate has always been more than martial arts—it’s a way to strengthen communities by empowering the next generation. Through programs, outreach, and partnerships, we help youth develop the skills they need to grow into confident, respectful, and resilient leaders.
Urban Youth Initiative
Our dojo is committed to making martial arts accessible to every child. Through the Urban Youth Initiative, ACTKO provides opportunities for kids in underserved areas to discover their potential, stay active, and gain the confidence to make positive choices in life.
After-School Enrichment
Since 2015, ACTKO has partnered with schools across Troy, Rensselaer, Albany, and Schenectady to bring karate directly into classrooms. These after-school programs introduce students to the discipline of martial arts while promoting focus, teamwork, and an anti-bullying message that resonates with children of all backgrounds.
Empowering Beyond the Dojo
The impact of karate goes far beyond kicks and punches. Students at ACTKO learn values that carry into school, home, and community:
Respect for self and others
Leadership and responsibility
Confidence to stand up against bullying
Perseverance in the face of challenges
We are proud to see our students grow not only as martial artists but as role models who inspire their peers and uplift their communities.
A Lasting Legacy
Every bow, every class, and every lesson at ACTKO builds toward something bigger: a generation of young people who are equipped for success in life. Our greatest reward is seeing students use the strength, discipline, and respect they learn here to make a difference in the world around them.
